1 Corinthians 13:3
If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[b] but do not have love, I gain nothing.
I question why or how a person could give all they have to the poor, or give their body up to be burned and NOT have love. I mean seriously when I see a person that is so generous, and self sacrificing I assume they are so good natured, and I also assume they are filled to the brim with love. Truth be told, I will continue assuming that, however in reading this text I am reminded that it is possible to do all those things, while NOT having love. I mean why would the author (Paul) even bring it up if it wasn’t actually a matter of concern. These verses are very eye opening, because it causes you to sit and think real hard about the issues of love.
Another important piece to remember is that the type of love the author is talking about is a different kind of love than we typically see in the world around us. It’s a uniquely, special, love that is TRUE. A love that develops in our heart that is placed their by a God that is the PERFECT example of REAL LOVE. I personally find it exciting to know that this special, unique kind of genuine love is attainable. I also am comforted knowing that being able to possess that kind of love has less to do about what we ‘do’. So far the love the author has discussed lies inside of us, it’s something that we can ‘have’ vs. something we can ‘do’.
It’s not about what we do, or how we look to the outside world that counts…
IT’S ABOUT WHAT’S INSIDE!!!!!
